Exploring AI & Agentic Systems – Improving Accessibility and Real Time Decision Making
Panel 1 set a pragmatic tone for the conference by cutting through the hype surrounding AI and agentic systems and grounding the discussion in operational reality. Panellists emphasised that while definitions of AI continue to evolve, the real challenge lies in applying underlying technologies in ways that demonstrably improve decision making, accessibility, and business outcomes.
A recurring theme was the shift from experimentation to value creation. Speakers highlighted the importance of targeting use cases that directly impact profitability, asset performance, quality, and workforce effectiveness, rather than pursuing AI initiatives for novelty alone. Automation, predictive maintenance, and quality optimisation were repeatedly cited as areas where AI can deliver measurable returns when aligned with clearly defined business objectives.
The discussion also explored the balance between decentralised access and robust governance. Panellists agreed that widespread accessibility is essential to unlock value, particularly by empowering frontline teams and citizen developers, but only when supported by clear guardrails around security, compliance, bias, and data privacy. Rather than rigid central control, a human centric model emerged, positioning AI as a copilot that augments expertise while keeping accountability firmly with people.
Data quality and integration were debated as both enablers and constraints. While foundational data challenges remain, the panel stressed that organisations should avoid delaying progress in pursuit of perfection. Instead, starting with priority problems, integrating across existing systems, and progressively improving data and workflows were seen as the fastest path to real time, trusted decision support.
