Reaping Rewards Risking Reputation in the GenAI Era
Todd Baker VP, Alliances, Turnitin
Todd Baker from Turnitin delivered a thought provoking session on the hidden pressures surrounding the rise of generative AI within the energy sector. He noted that although enthusiasm for new AI tools is accelerating, many organisations are still unsure how to safeguard the material they create. The gap between rapid production and responsible oversight is widening, and with it the risk to credibility and stakeholder trust.
Baker drew on Turnitin’s latest research to show that the dangers are often subtle rather than dramatic. He explained how quietly embedded inaccuracies, unverified citations and recycled material can slip into technical reports, proposals and public statements. These issues rarely emerge from malicious intent but from teams working at pace without the checks that would normally protect accuracy.
To move forward, he argued, organisations need support frameworks that evolve just as quickly as the tools they adopt. Baker presented Turnitin’s approach as one example of how large scale verification can fit naturally into everyday workflows, giving reviewers confidence that what they sign off is both original and defensible. His overarching message was that strong governance is not a brake on innovation but a requirement for using GenAI with authority.
